Lee Mindel (1945-2012) received his Master of Architecture from Harvard University in 1976 after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Architecture, at the University of Pennsylvania. Mindel started his career working for renowned New York architecture firms such as Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill and Rogers, Butler, Burgun. Peter Shelton too had already work experience before going on this project with Lee. Graduated in architecture, at the University of Pennsylvania and Pratt Institute in 1975, Shelton started his career by working for firms such as Edward Durrel Stone & Associates and Emery Roth & Sons.

Institutions such as The American Institute of Architecture, San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts have exhibited Shelton and Mindel's practice projects in both traveling and permanent exhibitions.
Their product design lines include collections for Knoll, Waterworks, Jack Lenor Larsen, V'Soske and Nessen Lighting. Architectural Digest has recognized SMA as one of the top 100 design firms of the last century and Peter L. Shelton and Lee F. Mindel, FAIA were recognized as the Deans of American Design in 2005.
Both Peter L. Shelton and Lee F. Mindel, FAIA, have been inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame.
