Tunisian born (1959) but raised in England to where he moved in 1963, the designer Tom Dixon actually dropped out of Chelsea School of Art to play bass in the band ‘Funkapolitan’. Years... Read more later the bass player and untrained designer started to produce furniture and set up ‘Space’, a creative think-tank and shop for him and other young designers.
Despite his lack of training, Tom Dixon was talented and by the late 1980’s he was already working for Cappellini. Throughout his career, Dixon’s talent was recognised by many manufacturers from whom he worked and with whom he collaborated.
In 2000, Tom’s work was recognised by an Order of the British Empire (OBE) Award by Her Majesty the Queen.
It was only in 2002 that Tom Dixon set up his own eponymous design company which includes an Interior Design arm and a Design Research Studio. Internationally known his brand sells now in 63 countries with permanent set-ups in England, America and Hong Kong.
Recent awards and nominations include ‘Designer of the Year ‘, London Design Museum, ‘Best Lighting Design’, ICFF show, ‘Best Accessory’ Elle Decoration and ‘Designer of the Year 2008’, Architektur & Wohnen Magazine.
Tom is also a doctorate of the University of the Arts London, and some of his work can be found in the permanent collections of some of the world’s most famous museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Museums of Modern Art in New York and Tokyo, and at the Centre Beaubourg (Pompidou).
