Born in Scotland in 1946, Tristram Mylius studied product and furniture design at Hornsey College of Art, London, and later worked for architect Theo Crosby at design consultancy Crosby Fletcher Forbes (later Pentagram).... Read more At a time when the most exciting furniture designs available were imports from Scandinavia and Italy, and prompted by the lack of modern design in British-made upholstery, he and his wife Hazel founded Hitch Mylius in 1971 aiming specifically to design and manufacture simple, well-crafted upholstered furniture for both contract and domestic markets. The partnership’s first customer, Liberty, at that time highly respected for its modern furniture department, went on to become a mainstay of the company’s success in the early years, followed by Terence Conran’s new Conran Shop in 1974. The ever-growing product range soon became a favourite for the contract market and the areas of corporate, institutional and public environments now dominate the company’s output.
Throughout the 1970’s the product ranges were all designed in-house. Later the commissioning of outside designers was seen as an important means of broadening the company’s repertoire, while Mylius’s hands-on approach to product development has always ensured that the core ethic of simplicity, proportion and close attention to craftsmanship and detailing has never been compromised. Long-lasting co-operations with a number of architects and designers have resulted in some of the most iconic and recognisable furniture designs to come out of Britain in recent decades, including Simon Pengelly’s ground-breaking ‘star bench system’ hm83, the hm61 ‘Oxo’ seating by Nigel Coates, and David Chipperfield’s rigorously disciplined hm93 sofas.
Having always been based in the north London area, starting modestly with a work bench and sewing machine in their own garage and moving to ever larger premises as the workforce expanded, the company moved to its present premises in Enfield in 1995.
The company celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2011.
